The calendar we use today is flawed, it loses a day every 3300 years. About 20 years ago I was told a story by Duncan Steel about a secret plan In Elizabethan England to deploy a new, better calendar to weaken the Pope and the Catholic Church. The work originated with Simon Cassidy, a calendar researcher who threaded together calendar design, the work of John Dee and England’s attempts to Colonize the Americas in the lat 16th century.https://www.hermetic.ch/cal_stud/cassidy/index.html
I’m not saying this is true, but it’s a fun story that explains a bit about the astronomical and ecclesiastical origins of the calendar we have today

Not a story I normally click on but seeing it was from you I had to. As it turns out it is totally what I am interested in. Keep it up Scott.
congrats on one million subs Scott!! You’re one of my favorite youtubers ever! I’ve been watching since you’ve had 300,000 or so subs! Keep up the amazing videos!!!
EAST COAST!
Love you Scott, fantastic video as always.
Hello Scott, I wish you a beautiful new and successful New Year. And I’m really looking forward to your other great videos!
The Misses did good!!!
Congrats to 1M, Scott! Enjoyed your speech as always
I had never heard of John Dee until two days ago, in the video game Nioh, of all places, and now you’re referencing him. Isn’t there something that defines previously unknown knowledge appearing multiple times in quick succession after the first learning of it?
Ah, if it’s a record perihelion then that might have contributed to the fires in Oz.
Congrats on the 1M subs
All the best for the next decade :~) Hope all was good over the holidays. :~)
congrats on 1 MILLION!
Love your content!
Love the Iranian calendar caviat!
In short, we’re now in the roaring twenties! I just hope it doesn’t end like last century’s (The Great Depression).
Loved it!
OOOOOH! “… back when I wouldn’t diss astrologers…” Now that is a memorable quote!!!
In a parallel universe, the number of days divides exactly into the length of a year, and the value of pi is exactly 3.
And we have twelve fingers.
Sooooo Scott, where did you get the Gunstar? Is that a 3D print job I am guessing? Very awesome and quite subtle in the background there.
Last time I checked you didn’t have 1 mil. subsribers, congratulations.
Q.E. loved the D.
Intriguing detail from the history.
Congrats on 1M subs Scott! I love this channel and love watching it grow! Thanks for EVERYTHING!
🛰 #FlySafe 🚀
its 2020…
…we dis astrologers!!
I’m Scott Manley, sail safe!
“he was an astrologer back when *I* wouldn’t diss astrologers” <-- what's with the *I* ? Are you Emperor Palpatine/wolverine/Thanos or something?
Emergency ski vacation? Pretty rough time, there!
Weaponized calendars… I like that phrase!
12020 HE my dudes
UK was already brexiting 🤷🏻
That was outstanding. Thank you for posting that. Oddly enough I was trying to figure out how to add the Hebrew calendar to Outlook and ended up here. I hate forgetting to fast on the 10th of Tevet and figured no problem. I have been an IT person since ‘95 and somehow forgot how tortured online paths can get 🙀 so this was a wonderful break.
What the hell is that shirt 😂
100 years later they established my home city Kingston, Jamaica. Coincidence? I think so, without a doubt, since it’s further from 77W than Spanish Town.
This isn’t even the first time calendars have been weaponized.
Ever wonder why Julius Ceasar of all people invented a calendar? In his earlier years Ceasar was in charge of adjusting the pre-julian calendar when it fell out of line, and when fighting the civil war he used his knowledge of what season it actually should be to out-smart his opponents who’s calendar was out of line.
2020 Is a new decade, it’s a part of the twenties. Decades run from jan 1, xxn0 to dec 31 xxn9. Year zero thing only applies to centuries and milenia.
“Skiing” got it.
10:38 East coast
Blew my mind at the end there. Well, really through the whole thing, but ya, that last part.
Luv the vids, informative and easygoing, keep em coming.
10:38 West Coast?
Wow. That was really interesting! Somehow I think I’ve been screwed out of some overtime by us using the wrong calendar!
12:15 – 77 degrees, should get the Flat Earthers’ conspiracy senses twitching.
Absolutely fascinating! I barely heard of John Dee before.
(BTW, glad to see that none of your limbs are encased in plaster or some more high-tech means of immobilization (o: )
I want the days that were stolen and started April Fools back.
You were in Armagh? Dam. Hope your enjoyed it. Thats my neck of the woods
missed opportunity to sa something on the lines of “I would say happy 2020 but it’s still 2019 and happy christmas eve”
2:31 – Not to be confused with the _Siberian_ year, which is a measure of GULAG prisoners’ sentence lengths.
Yes! Starting 2020 with the old intro! And it’s fine…sometimes you just need an emergency ski vacation.
Unexpected subject, but absolutely fascinating!
77deg West is somewhat a spooky coincidence but interesting nonetheless. Love the history nuggets, especially from old England where she ran and changed the world
If we really applied Milankovitch cycles to our calendars I wonder what the taylor series look like
I won’t comment until my heads stops spinning…
Spin Safe
mVm
Oh heck you were at Armagh Observatory! i remember that place as a ween.
Do you mean to tell me you built a time machine…… out of a Gregorian??
After the last few days’ news, I’m laughing desperately at “CAUTION: Only applies if you’re using Iran’s calendar”…
Had to go skiing. Rough life Scott, rough life
4:50 how did they know to do all this?!
10:39 Um, East Coast!
(I got your back Scott)
Excellent “Off Tangent” video.
Spring starts on March 19th. this year.
This is Assassin’s Creed worthy!
12:26 I see what you did there. 😏😏
this was really interesting!
6:50 anyone going to point out Calendar is spelt with a K and an E there.
no shade, just thought it was interesting so figured I would throw that out there.
Mind you, all these calculations were done before spreadsheets!
Are we going to be talking about the all-powerful, history-defining Virginia Man?
Sure Scott, “My wife said I had to go skiing cause l was too dam tired”. Sounds a bit like the dog ate my homework!
And now it’s just blame the wife! I like it 😆
I have to confess that I love that sort of thing. conspiracy-history-maths-science-church ..perfect.. it’s like a better version of the da vinci code. now I have to go watch these movies again.
10:33 – Also, longitude was _far_ from easy to calculate accurately back then, meaning that they could have easily ended up seizing a piece of the Spanish Caribbean, possibly at great cost in blood and treasure, and gone to all the trouble of building a meridian observatory on it, only to find that, oops, they grabbed _the wrong longitude._
Only Scott can talk 20 minutes about calendars and make it interesting
I feel like it’s been a decade sence your last video lol😁
You look refreshed and upbeat, Scott! I think the missus’ insistence was well worth it.
Any time Dr Dee comes up it’s going to be weird.
“Emergency ski vacation” … you are indeed a fortunate man.
Minor “west coast” misstatement at 10:38 mark.
Hey it runs straight through Jamaica. What better place to start a glorious tropical colony for her majesty.
My head hurts from all this thinking. I need to go skiiing.
Congratulations for one M subs!
The question is did George Washington know about this since he laid out the District of Columbia?
Interesting. definitely some “National Treasure” level information there.
“England, sorry” … this guy really knows his stuff.
5:55 – Nitpick: what King Henry wanted (and eventually got, no thanks to the Pope) was an _annulment,_ not a divorce. An annulment voids the marriage retroactively (so that the parties to the annulled marriage are legally considered to have never been married in the first place); a divorce ends the marriage but does _not_ void it (so that the parties to the divorced marriage are legally considered to have previously been married, but to no longer be married at the present time). Having his first two marriages annulled until one of the wives produced a persistent male heir allowed him to disinherit his elder daughters in favour of his (eventual) younger son (not that it prevented either of said daughters from winding up with the throne in due course anyway); his last two annulments were for other reasons (annulment three happened because it just didn’t work out, although they remained close friends until he died, while annulment four happened because the female party was cheating on him).
0:08 Your wife seems like a wonderful person 😃
John Dee was a really strange man, like your small bit doesn’t even scratch the surface.
“if that doesn’t get your conspiracy theory antenna twitching, I’m not sure what will” ROFLMAO
I’m Scott Safe! Fly manly! 🚀
Perhaps there is still some evidence to be found in John Dee’s secret burnt-out lab in the south of France…
Something to add: There’s a general problem with dates in the primary sources, as many important events have conflicting dates given. Sweden actually adopted the Gregorian calendar, but then the King became Lutheran and switched back to the Julian calendar.
To outgeek
Scott Manley, 2020
Science101 exam question.
1. How 1 year got its 365 days? Please elaborate.
Scott Manley: ……sir, could i have another answer booklet please.
As a history nerd, I highly recommend reading “The Watchers: A Secret History of the Reign of Elizabeth I” by Stephen Alford, which goes into fascinating historical detail on the Elizabethan intelligence complex and the conflict with Catholic Europe. I first learned of this calendar issue in that book.
6:22 – He was an astrologer before it was not cool
“Caution: Only Applies If you’re using Iran’s Calendar.”
Just a message here: thank you Scott, for everything. Your videos got me more seriously into KSP, pushed me back to my studies, and made me the Space system engineer I am now. I am so very glad to see you achieve 1M subscribers, and for you to keep true to yourself and all. Also for being one of the coolest nerfs around, and an inspiration for us all.
Fly safe, for a long time still!
Thank goodness you’re back, I’ve been struggling to know how to fly
“I’m going to out-geek you all.” That didn’t need to be said. I assumed it before I clicked on the video.
Skiing with the wifee is an important part of any marriage.
“yesterday we had earth move through it’s closest perihelion in a century” Which probably didn’t help Australia one bit
I need an emergency ski trip
If you poke around Washington, DC with Google Maps to see what structures lie precisely on longitude 77 W, you find. . . guess what. . . the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Catholics did an end run around John Dee’s wicked plan!
RUST: Rapid Unscheduled Ski-Trip
The question in a Bar Trivia session about twentyyears ago “what happened between Sept 2 and Sept 14 in 1752? When I answered “Absolutely Nothing”, you could have heard a pin drop. . .
Well, the only real solution to an accurate calendar is to adjust the Earth’s rotation and orbit to exactly be 24 hours and 365 days.
