Giant Stars Don’t Follow the Rules | SciShow News

Astronomers are learning just how big early stars might have been, and how their deaths have shaped the universe. Some may have even been so massive that they skipped the whole star phase and collapsed straight into black holes!

Hank, you need a hairdresser! New patreon goal!!

  26. Maracachucho

The thought of an event horizon forming and the almost certain possibility of a super/hypernova happening inside of it as all the mass is compressed… that kind of blows my mind!

  27. Johnny Li

oh, 500th episode! Is that why Hank’s hair is like that?

  60. op4000exe

Wohoo the second answer is amazing since I, a couple of years ago literally asked the question on reddit, about what’d happend if a star was in the larger excess of 1000 solar masses. As assuming lifespan goes down with increased mass, it’d be reasonable to assume that at some point it’d literally be so massive that the surface gravity of the star would exceed 1C, at which point it wouldn’t be a star, but it’d be a black hole.
So thanks whomsoever answered that question (the scientist behind these papers), that’s one more question answered that I don’t have to think about again.

  61. Mark Duvall

Congratulations on 500 episodes, and keep up the great work!

Giant Stars,”Rules? We don’t need no stinkin’ rules!”

  77. John Harbo

I’m curious to know if the Perseus nebula is is the remnant of such an amazingly cosmic “hyper nova cocoons” & if it’s gamma burst was near enough to affect the Cambrian era apocalypse?
    What do y’all think?

  78. DieWeltIstSchlecht

Happy 500th!!! Here’s to five hundred more!!

  92. Zac M.

Congratulations on 500 episodes! Wooo! Genuinely love this channel, I just kinda like space!
Also the fact that early stars _could possibly_ skip the nova stage or even the star stage could be skipped and get an instant black hole is a kinda terrifying tbh. The latter mostly. Can’t really get my head round that!

  93. Ranger Ruby

So there are supernovas. There are Hypernovas. Are there just…novas? Do those exist? I really want to know and I don’t care if there was an obvious answer that I forgot.

  94. MasterMazeProductions

wow, I remember when you guys first announced the launch of SciShow Space! Can’t believe its been so long

  95. Luis Bravo

  96. The Exoplanets Channel

Perfect video to relax a friday evening!

  97. New Message

This could easily be a TMZ video title.

  98. batmanfanforever08

Nova = star brightens and then dims, no explosion
    Supernova = star explosion
    Hypernova = big star explosion
Unnova = star skips explosion, goes straight blackhole
Failed supernova = star that tries to explode, but doesn’t
Seed = gas clouds that just become a blackhole, no explosion and no star
[I think that’s how it works, I could be wrong. Please correct me, if I am wrong (with sources).]

  99. Kristel Jean de la Cruz

Scientists: Hey that’s not within the rules!
Giant starts I AM THE RULES

  100. antiisocial

The first half of this video blows and the second half of this video sucks. ๐Ÿ˜‚
