Many galaxies formed fast after the Big Bang, but about half of them suddenly stopped making new stars and it looks like this is literally because they ran out of gas. And with new instruments and techniques, we are now finding lost galaxies hidden in dust!

Early galaxies were like my dad: to him, the E meant “Eh, there’s still a quarter-tank left.”

  2. jacob

we dont know the true age of the universe though

  3. Matt Perdeck

So if you lived on a planet in one of those galaxies hidden by gas 13 billion years ago, would you see no stars because of the gas? Or does the gas only matter over distances of billions of lightyears?

  4. cutetinyzombie

James Webb scheduled to launch by the end of the year… that phrase gives me a sense of dejavu… I wonder why…

  6. The Freshest

How far we look and how long ago it was is not a 1 to 1 ratio. The CMB is 46 billion light-years away because of inflation and expanding spacetime

  7. David Maurand

hmmm… you showed the big bang starting from a point rather than everywhere at once. : /

  8. Tinysim

JWST launch date is one of the great mysteries of the universe.

  9. Angela Anita

People will be kicking themselves in few weeks if they miss the opportunity to buy and invest in bitcoin

  10. pyronac1

with how long we have waited and the much anticipation of its launch, i have a feeling that the James Web telescope will not make it to space. and if it does, something will go wrong and it will be too far away to fix.

  11. TheRealWormbo

I swear, VPN providers only have two stories โ€“ either “your ISP is spying on you” (without going into details why the ISP would be more problematic than the VPN provider, despite the latter being the one with device access through an app), or “here’s a thing you can do that totally violates the EULA of the service, but that’ your problem, not ours”.

  12. thisiszaphod

I expect James Webb himself was very late for everything….

“While you wait for the telescope to launch” ๐Ÿ˜‚

(For those that don’t know the James-Webb Space Telescope began development in 1996 & was originally scheduled to launch in 2007… it’s a bit of a running joke in the Astro community that it’s always launching ‘next year’).

  15. TheScaper28

Only a billion years if light travels the same speed in all directions.

  16. Karthik Haritha

James Webb telescope… Are you ready to be deployed this year? Or do we keep waiting and hoping our grandchildren can see you be deployed?

  17. sarcasmo57

    That is super interesting.

  18. AndyBeans

“JWST… which will launch later this year” I honestly checked the timestamp to see if I was watching an old or current video ๐Ÿ˜

  19. John Briggs

5:30 thereโ€™s our daily James Web.

  20. Patrick Egan

You just delayed James Webb telescope by 1 week for mentioning it by name in a YT vid lol

  21. Guy Boo

“There was barely any heavy elements in the universe at this time, how could it have been aliens? What would they have been made out of?”

  22. Pup314

James webb telescope is a boondoggle and will never launch.

  23. P Bebnowski

Really YouTubers? No cold gas jokes?

  24. InfamousMrFox

When did wrestling legend Big Show started hosting SciShow Space?

  25. d R

God I hate these utterly inane and specious clickbait titles. Just call it what it is. There’s no “tank” involved here. If you care more about view counts than actually educating people, you have absolutely no business operating a channel of this type. Besides, people who are attracted by clickbait titles are intellectually deprived, and some of them even consider being educated a negative thing – it’s totally bizarre how some people seem to have zero interest in the world around them. They must live such empty lives.

  26. Grow How

What temperatures are we talking about for cold and hot gas?

  27. Bashar Mously

We will have warp 5 starships before the James Webb Space Telescope launches.

  28. Jansen Art

JWST is such a jock telescope. Held back multiple times but king of the schoolyard.

  29. Jansen Art

Glad we didn’t tell anyone religious about this gap in our knowledge. Sounds like a perfect stretch of ignorance for “god” to bondo over.

  30. Justin Bellotti

The thumbnail to this vid made me realize that the gas station logo looks like a one person hostage situation.

  31. Troy Graham

I like to think about how there’s a bunch of photons blasting earth’s history across space. Of course, instantly travelling to 6000 (insert number really) light years away to catch the photons that left earth 6000 years ago would be absolutely impossible but they are out there, somewhere, travelling super fast.

  32. Militant Pacifist

What do Metroid Prime 4 and the James Webb Space Telescope have in common?

Theyโ€™re both taking a long time to launch.

  33. WestOfEarth

Wouldn’t UV radiation be stretched due to red shift? I mean they must have known that and wouldn’t have considered using UV telescopes, right?

  34. aaron4820

    UK right now: not cool

  35. Robert McGarry

So every video I’ve watched today has had a food pun as the main comment. It’s becoming obvious that they aren’t real comments.

  36. Marin3r

    Welcome back Reid!

  37. Austin Hibdon

Still holding out hope the JWST is going to launch, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  38. Bryan Smith

Whole galaxies have been born … and died.

  39. Chris Heichel

Doesn’t the cold gas get hot as it starts clumping together pushing it apart again before it has a chance to make the star?

  40. ะ’ะฐะปะตะฝั‚ะธะฝ ะšะพัั‚ัŽะบ

    Hello, missed your voice.

  41. RotcodFox

If the nearest solar system (Proxima) is 4.25 lightyears away, how long would it take a spaceship to reach it? Maybe 15 years?

  42. 0.75 Bond Albedo

    No, no they didn’t

  43. Justajoke Forme

    Galaxy is like jello

  49. Jamie Fitzpatrick

So much is waiting for James Webb. Iโ€™d lose every coin toss, dice roll, and card flop for the rest of my life for the James Webb Space Telescope to arrive and deploy with no hiccups. – December 18th ๐Ÿคž

  50. Matchrocket

I don’t like to play favorites, but you are one of my favorite hosts Reid.

  51. andyman aus

It will be the biggest discovery in space science history when we finally find those literal empty gas tanks floating around the galaxy centres.

  52. dreamingwolf8382
