Ahhh, ultra radiation protection… this is it. Mars HERE I COME!

  5. tara lynn

    Hi Anton

  6. Paulus Aurelius

Add astragalus to your sunscreen. It contains selenium. It will combine with your melanin and add protection.

  7. Stand4Liberty

If astronauts used a selenomelanin cream would it turn them purple?

  8. Bob in the West

Does the moon have any lead?

  9. Hydrocarbon82

Russian math: 20 REM – not great, but not terrible either…MARS = safe 100%

  10. theonetruemorty

    My selenomelanin brings
    All the monkeys into space
They’re like, just rub it on your face
Damn right, just rub it on your face
Before you know it we’ll be
    All over the place

  11. Doug Golde

If you’re going to have to live underground on mars then some kind of boring or tunneling machines are needed. Wait a minute.

  12. Odyseusz Koskiniotis

Science at its best. I wonder how did they even had the idea to combine those together

    Radiation? very vague Anton

I’ve been hoping for biomechanical suits and ships, seems the natural progression for deep exploration. This could be an important element to that kind of thing. Self-healing skins and systems are going to be beneficial.

On a side note, sci-fi novel idea: Far future humanity is exploring deep space and suffers a catastrophe. All that’s left of us live in space. Evolution takes it’s course, and Homo Galactus is darker than Avery Brooks and spindlier than Doug Jones.

  17. Sam Smith

    Yay

  18. herbetron o

a layer of this , built into the space craft, and also the suits they ware – would be awesome !

  19. Avery Brooks

What risks are there using this new sunscreen? Answer: Cancer. What’s the risk of not using the sunscreen? Answer: Cancer. Ok, going with sunscreen.

  20. ElmwoodParkHulk

Inititially they need to use Elon Musks tunneling equipment to go underground which will shield all radiation at a certain depth . Create an underground environment …..air tight . Maybe find a way to convert the Martian atmosphere to oxygen with new technology then pump that down into the underground environment.

  21. Dhakti Zero

i didnt need another reason to not swim in the sea, but i got one.

I thought that was a dinosaur

  24. Chromium Dragon

Conquering the issue of radiation is paramount to space travel, so this is awesome news.

  25. Alberto Martinez

so many potential jokes from this… invest

  26. Kenneth Irgendwas

Haven’t watched yet, but if this is realistically feasible, it is huuuuuuge

  27. GuidetteExpert

I think God will create sunscreen with his mutations just like he does with all species if he sees it is neccisery.

  28. Jay Ramsay

Anton! You are the best! Real science! Love it!

  29. CX32

Seems the best place for us on Mars will be subsurface. Let the ground shield them.
If life there exist, subsurface might be the place.

  30. pruna blue pepper

Ah, yes, we all remember the sunscream after rising over the horizon πŸŒπŸŒ„πŸ˜«πŸš€(οΏ£Ο‰οΏ£)p

*Phase 13 – Melanochrome, or Melanochromic Organ.*
“This organ is hemispherical and black. It functions in an indirect and extremely complicated manner. It monitors radiation levels and types bombarding the skin, and if necessary, sets off chemical reactions to darken the skin to protect it from ultraviolet exposure. It also provides limited protection from other forms of radiation.”

  32. HMan

Forget sunscreen, just spray that stuff onto thin plastic films, stack them up, and line the inside of the spacecraft or space suit with it.

  33. Toxy

2:33 About 20cm thick.. thats a pretty big amount of cream that you need 😍

  34. Superlative CG

Radiation in the Marvel Universe is insanely terrifying.

  37. douglas hales

cover yourself in mud like animals do earth

  38. D V

What about a suspension gel as a layer of protection on the ship? Combined with an electromagnetic radiation shield, a layer of water and the spacecraft itself, it could drastically reduce the exposure. Just a thought

  39. CRP

    Is there lead on Mars?

  40. Dr what

    That is fantastic news.

  41. Cole Dedhand

    Rad-X is real!

  42. Robert Dean

I got my wonderful person t-shirt today 😊 I never thought a shirt could make me so happy! You are a wonderful person Anton!

  43. TheOriginalMakaaka

Just so you know, purple mushroom spores reflect radiation and this allows mushroom spores to literally float through space and colonize on planets.

  44. john delong

    Just evolve that spacey gooo.

  45. Tymko C

    That fish looks scary.

  46. Synergy Saturn

    Great news

  47. Jibberwock

Makes sense. Selenium is used to blacken steel…Oxpho Blue.

  48. Beta Wan

i had heard of the food space to human waste space for shileding in the craft used to travel to mars, gotta say im glad its not derived from that

  49. John Baxter

Yeah the melanin colours the fish but its the colour that reflects the radiation aways.

  50. Unpopular Popular Opinion

Wait until humans discover non silicate 10 πŸ‘½πŸ‘½

  51. XRP 747E

Wonderful teacher person… that was wonderful, as usual. Thank you!

  52. Sean Carroll

    I don’t see a cream happening, but…

I do see a way to use this as part of a radiation shield itself. We know how deep alpha and beta particles can go, which would be a large portion of the solar wind. (For example, a simple piece of foil could block alpha easily enough.) If this mixture was used as part of a layered shield, it could absorb all three primary sources of radiation damage from the sun.

So here is how a Mars base would probably work. The habs will likely employ an outer ablative shield to protect against abrasion, an outer tough hull for extra protection, an inner radiation hull using selenomelanin in a honeycomb sandwich matrix…You get the general idea, though.

  53. Joshua Moe

Melanin we soak up the sun 🌞!

Interesting. This has been one of the great problems for space travel. I hope it pans out.

  65. Ice Angel

Thanks for the info Anton! My son wants to go to Mars with Elon Musk!! Arrrrgh Glad to hear they are making progress on the radiation issues. Looking forward to your follow up reports.

  66. custard the pipecat

Hello Anton! what about c-60? it’s supposed to protect you from radiation.

  67. 1nvd

No other YouTube video has information on this nano-material

  68. Brad B.

    Amazing

  69. Carl Ive

    Nice πŸ‘πŸΌ

  70. Sam C

    Thanks antonπŸ™

  71. Austin Stoddard

They should try it as a paint or some kind of powder coating. It would be a much lighter shielding.

  72. bryan smith

Thank you Anton That has to be one of the most informative post I’ve seen so far as to the REAL reasons we Don’t do AND also an insight into new tech

  73. silverbladeTE

“RAD-X” from “Fallout” games becomes reality! ;)

  74. SmellTheL

Now you 5G nerds can leave us alone lol

  75. Raghu Parandhaman

So, the melanin in our hair provides protection from radiation! πŸ˜ƒ. But … what about bald heads?!? πŸ‘΄πŸΌπŸ‘©β€πŸ¦². Melanin wigs would sell a lot on Mars 🀣🍻

  76. Combat King 0

Something I didn’t know about melanin until recently is that it’s found in all lineages of eukaryote.
Plants, animals and fungi all produce it, so it’s reasonable to say it was present in their last common ancestor.
I wonder if some bacteria and archaea can also produce melanin.

  77. shkunk1

    Amazing!

  78. Andrew H

    Utterly fascinating stuff!

    The β€˜burning bush’ or this….
I know what i prefer to listen to.

I think shampoo has selenium too. Stock on hair products?

  86. Grand Imperator Tiberius

    Thanks for educating me :)

  87. Aftab Kazi

How about editing it’s geans to improve it form 2β„… to higher

  88. Kalydosos

I didn’t think about Melanin like that! I always that it was simply a carbon based molecule that makes humans brown.

  89. Cameron Hebron

More evidence that my melanin is magic

  90. Ross McLeod

Selenium is found in very high concentrations in Brazil nuts. I found out the hard way by mega binges on the buggers and then suffering through the consequences. Thought I’d share…

  91. Michelle Marie Perez

Wow! Great news. Thank you.πŸ‘£πŸΎπŸ¦…πŸ”¬πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβ™₯οΈπŸ”βš–οΈπŸŽ»β›°οΈπŸ•ŠοΈπŸ’ƒπŸ‘ŸπŸŒ πŸŽπŸ’°

  92. hanikrummi hundursvin

so basically all astronauts will be required to wear a blackface every day. ThatΒ΄s going to get so popular. :)

  93. Chaz Domingo

Creams simply wouldn’t work. It would need to be THOROUGHLY applied way too often to be of any practical use on missions.

We either need to make a suit of this stuff or we can genetically engineer astronauts to produce this in their skins. We would likely need to feed them on a diet of brazil nuts.

  94. Kurtlane

What is the name of that fish? Why does it need so much melanin?

  95. Kyles Isler

Strange… I just got done watching Chernobyl and this video pops up.

  96. The Exoplanets Channel

Exciting news. Maybe it could be used for Solar One, the interstellar spacecraft that I propose.

  97. Pull Myfinger

    Exciting information! Thanks Anton!!

  98. Marcus Jordan

Hey I got extra melanin seeing that im black! Hahahaha but seriously some pan African historians and researchers have been saying melanin is a wonder material for years.. There are a lot of unexplored property’s of melanin that have pretty amazing property’s!! Thought I would share this comment with everyone πŸ˜‰

  99. Jeff Scantling

    Just call it “Rad-X”
